Good Friday Network Gathering

Update… Thanks to all who were able to join.  We are grateful for the Phillips family leading us in praise and worship and for the opportunity to reflect on the significance of Good Friday!  We are also grateful for the news the Roberts family received during our time together that a heart donor had been found for Katherine (She now has the heart and is in recovery!).   ——- You are invited to join friends of Simple Church Alliance at this year’s Good Friday Worship and Communion Gathering in Lexington at the Prayer Room on Broadway. We will come together to worship, share communion, and tell stories of God giving hope in the midst of the darkest situations.  We hope you will join us, whether you are a longtime participant in a simple/house church fellowship… Read More »Good Friday Network Gathering

Resurrection Day Communion (By Jeff Herron)

March 27, 2016 — Resurrection Day, by Jeff Herron Unexpectedly volunteering to serve communion with Darah at the Resurrection Day gathering of the Simple Church Alliance network. Can’t remember acting in this capacity before. Starting to think right away about what words I might say as people come up to receive the elements. There’s that passage in Corinthians somewhere about not being unworthy, but I can’t remember it well enough. Maybe the more traditional “the body of Christ, broken for your sins…”, but I can’t really recall exactly how that one goes either, and I’m not much for formulaic incantations anyway. Realize there’s a bit of pride in the mix, wanting to seem competent and experienced at something I don’t really have any experience with. Figure I’ll just say or not say as the Lord… Read More »Resurrection Day Communion (By Jeff Herron)

The Lords Supper – The Reason We Gather?

The meal is potluck, or as we jokingly say, “pot-providence.”  Everyone brings food to share with everyone else.  When the weather is nice, all the food is placed on a long folding table outside.  A chest full of ice sits beside the drink table.   Kids run wildly around.  They are having so much fun that they must be rounded up by parents and encouraged to eat.  After a prayer of thanksgiving is offered, people line up, talking and laughing as they load their plates with food.  In the middle of all the food sits a single loaf of bread next to a large container of the fruit of the vine.  Each believer partakes of the bread and juice/wine while going through the serving line. The smaller kids are encouraged to occupy one of the few… Read More »The Lords Supper – The Reason We Gather?

Communion Lessons: Childlike Humility

By Karla Duerson Gavin asked today, “In what way does God want me to be more childlike in my humility?” referring to Matthew 18:2-4 from the Bible.  Nothing personal came to mind at first.  Then later when I was cleaning up from our Simple Church gathering, something came. It was a new thought based on a familiar dilemma.  Normally, after everyone leaves I busily and easily put all the dishes in the washer, scrape the leftovers into the garbage disposal, put the toys in the bin, place books on the shelf, but then I come to the elements.  I go to the bread and the juice and I pause. This plate seems more sacred than the rest.  I don’t feel well dumping the contents of either the plate or cup down the sink, though I… Read More »Communion Lessons: Childlike Humility
