Zach Winters with Sylvie, Dana Vogel – POSTPONED

UPDATE:  THIS SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED.  STAY TUNED AND WE WILL UPDATE FOLKS ABOUT A NEW DATE.  MEANWHILE, ENJOY ZACH’S MUSIC WHILE QUARANTINED! Earlier this year, I was excited to see that Zach Winters released a new album. I first heard of Zach Winters when I noticed a tweet from one of my favorite songwriters, Josh Garrels, giving a shout out to Zach Winters and the album Monarch.   I checked it out and immediately became a Zach Winters fan, as did Karla.  When his newest album, Love is a Garden, came out, I immediately purchased it and knew right from the first track, “Give Thanks,” that this album was a gift to me personally. Living in the hospital for months on end can take a toll. Giving thanks is not something that is always… Read More »Zach Winters with Sylvie, Dana Vogel – POSTPONED

Free Christmas Music

With #GivingTuesday upon us, we would like to give a gift to you! Enjoy these songs recorded live at our simple church christmas gathering a couple of years ago! You can listen to and download all the songs for FREE at the link below.  If you enjoy it, please share it as well! This was our first ever attempt at recording a “simple church” worship event live.  I think that this recording came as close as possible to capturing the simplicity of families and friends coming together to celebrate the risen Savior.  This release also includes a song recorded live at a “skate church” gathering and the album version of “Lights on My House” by Inside Joke – which was performed at the Christmas event (but blew up the speakers and destroyed the live recording) —- Join… Read More »Free Christmas Music

Reality Christmas

I woke up this morning reflecting on my evening last night. Karla and I made our annual pilgrimage to Cincinnati to see our favorite musical group, Over The Rhine, with another couple involved with simple church planting in the northern part of Kentucky. Over The Rhine is the husband and wife duo of Lindford Detweiler and Karin Berquist.  In over 20 years of making music together, the couple has compiled multiple albums including three Christmas offerings they refer to as “reality Christmas” records. If you know me, then you know that I tend to be a pretty positive and upbeat person.  That is why I always find it odd that the sad songs at their shows are usually the ones that stick with me.  Last night was no exception.   Probably my favorite song was an incredibly sad song… Read More »Reality Christmas

Lecrae on Engaging Culture (Video & Free Album)

Check out the video below and hear Lecrae echo our plea to end the sacred/secular divide and truly embrace the “priesthood of all believers” (I have actually used the “JV” analogy he uses in the talk many times to address this issue.  It is always amazing to see how God puts the same ideas, even same words, in the hearts of people from different places and different backgrounds.) and call believers to live as missionaries within their given cultural context. I am convinced that the number one challenge for existing simple/house/organic churches is to continue heeding this call.  Failure to do so will result in ingrown groups of Christians meeting regularly for a “holy huddle.”  This is a timely message for The Church today! “We are great at talking about salvation and sanctification, we are… Read More »Lecrae on Engaging Culture (Video & Free Album)

The Pilot (poem and song)

I recently returned from a ski/snowboarding trip with several men that lead simple churches here in Kentucky.  As with most trips of this nature, everyone ends up sharing new music, YouTube videos, favorite movies, jokes, and other items that have provided us with recent laughter, joy, and occasionally insight into the Christian journey.  For me, Josh Garrel’s music has been one of my best musical finds in a long time.  I shared some songs with my good friend Matt, and in return he shared this great poem with me upon discussing the song “Pilot Me.”  May this poem and song encourage you today!   Crossing the Bar By Alfred, Lord Tennyson   Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out… Read More »The Pilot (poem and song)

Mega House Church (Rap)

Most of my life I have enjoyed satire.  Satire will often seek to approve of or accept as normal ideas that the satirist is actually seeking to attack.  Such is the case in this goofy song that applies attractional, hierarchical, personality driven, pulpit centered, church growth, clergy/laity ideas to simple/house/organic church ministry.

Remembering Pearl Jam

By Karla Duerson:  How can I sleep with so much life springing up?  A new simple church was birthed tonight with excitement all around and the adventure of the fight with our enemy—all the drama of light pushing back the darkness.  Then there was a movie with the promise of more to come with a friend who has keen eyes and big thoughts about the big screen and all that it can do and be.  The cherry?  A Pearl Jam documentary commemorating their 20 years together.  The almost two hour journey mapping out the life of the band was exhilarating for me. They were my favorite during a time when I needed music.  When I listened to their songs, I was transported, given a catharsis—a vent for all the tumult and angst of a teenager’s… Read More »Remembering Pearl Jam

Simple Church Music Ideas

Last week in our simple church gathering, several of us shared songs with the group that held a special meaning to us and our journey with Christ.  It was a simple and significant meeting idea that I’m sure we will repeat in the near future.  We sang some songs together while others were played for everyone to listen to.  Sharing songs in this way allowed us to deepen our friendships with one another as we learned how music has impacted our walk with Christ.  I shared this idea with our leaders and Elizabeth Harris replied to me with an idea of her own… I saw your idea for worship through song and thought I’d pass along something fun our group has done….Chris Phebus had a similar idea several weeks back, and he and Valerie ended… Read More »Simple Church Music Ideas
