16 Characteristics of Spectators (and Disciple-Makers)

I recently came across this list of attitudes or characteristics of “Spectators” and “Disciple-makers.” I found these lists while reviewing old notes I jotted down during the first days of this website and ministry.   I believe they are from the book (or inspired by the book) “No More Spectators” by Mark Nyswander. It’s worth considering as simple church leaders are also people who desire to be apart of the Great Commission in the ways that Jesus demonstrated while here on earth! Summer Network Gathering – July 27

Hey folks! Save The DATE! We will be out at the Wheeler’s farm for a day/evening of fellowship and fun. 1 pm-??? What:  100ft. Slip’n Slide, worship by the creek around 6pm. Bring a picnic dinner, swimming attire (if you want) and a chair and come hang out with friends of Simple Church Alliance! Maybe it’s a bigger deal than we think?

I am generally not someone who leads with the idea that simple church is the “most biblical” way to do church. For me, the idea that the New Testament church seemed to primarily gather in homes is helpful when explaining to folks why it’s normal for the church to primarily ebb and flow through homes, but It’s not my main motivation for advocating simple/house/organic church. For me primarily, simple church is just what makes the most sense given what I know about Jesus, how He has worked in my life, and how I have witnessed His Kingdom operate. Our simple church has settled into meeting on Sunday mornings and I’ve grown to enjoy it.  I have thought of six reasons I would encourage other simple churches to gather on Sunday mornings as well. Certainly there is not hard rule about when folks should meet and most every group will settle on times and locations for a host of reasons. An update on our baby girl…

Hey folks… Just wanted to give a short personal update here on the simple church website about our baby on the way, Margaret Wylie Duerson. Many of you know that Karla is pregnant with a little girl.  After our 20 week ultrasound, our midwife referred us to a high-risk pregnancy doctor.  We went to this appointment on Tuesday.  The doctor found that Wylie “likely” has Down syndrome.  There were a few indicators that led to this assessment: 1)There are two choroid plexus cysts on her brain (these are harmless, but often present in babies with a genetic disorder), and 2) her limbs measured slightly shorter than usual.  The third and most concerning issue is that she has a major heart defect.  The perinatologist believed it to be an AV canal.
