A “Radical” New Teaching Method Discovered?

Wired magazine has posted an article that examines how Sergio Juárez Correa in Mexico has been experimenting with a “radical new teaching method” that is having an amazing impact on his students.  As the western church continues to cling to many of the same ideas about education and discipleship found in modern academia, I think that we, the Church, would do well to rethink our ideas about learning as Sergio.  In fact, I think that the ideas about learning he “discovered” are really not new at all, but very much a return to the methods that Jesus used to make disciples in the New Testament.  The author summarizes Sergio’s ideas about learning this way: Knowledge isn’t a commodity that’s delivered from teacher to student but something that emerges from the students’ own curiosity-fueled exploration. Last month, I attended the Simple Church Conference lead by Neil Cole. I have read books and articles written by Neil but I really enjoyed the teaching on Life Transformation Groups (LTG). Embracing the City Church

City Church. I was recently reminded of just how important it is for those of us moving out of a traditional church setting (or even mindset) into a simple/organic type of church to embrace the “city church.”  Intellectually, most all believers would agree that even though we have numerous physical church locations in any given town that really there is only one church in any given city.  After all, this was the view of the believers in the New Testament—one church in a city that met in various locations.  While I have no doubt that for many of us this belief is held deep down, it seems that what we practically live out is not belief in a “city church” but belief in what I call the “my church/your church.” Reconnecting with the idea of… Read More »Embracing the City Church

Thoughts on Giving (Guest Blog)

Simple Church Celebration This SATURDAY Hey folks! Just a quick reminder that this Saturday the Simple Church Alliance will host a “summer celebration” gathering! How can the world engage in a conversation about Jesus when I am always inside those comfortable walls? The Holy Spirit has been moving in my heart about the need to start some sort of conversation in coffee shops and bars throughout the city. These are places people gather to strike up natural conversation. It is also a place where others go to be alone, people watch and listen in on others.
