Resurrection Day Communion (By Jeff Herron)

March 27, 2016 — Resurrection Day, by Jeff Herron Unexpectedly volunteering to serve communion with Darah at the Resurrection Day gathering of the Simple Church Alliance network. Can’t remember acting in this capacity before. Starting to think right away about what words I might say as people come up to receive the elements. There’s that passage in Corinthians somewhere about not being unworthy, but I can’t remember it well enough. Maybe the more traditional “the body of Christ, broken for your sins…”, but I can’t really recall exactly how that one goes either, and I’m not much for formulaic incantations anyway. Realize there’s a bit of pride in the mix, wanting to seem competent and experienced at something I don’t really have any experience with. Figure I’ll just say or not say as the Lord… Read More »Resurrection Day Communion (By Jeff Herron)

Podcast: What Is A Simple Church?

In episode 2 of the all new Keep it Simple Podcast, we address the question “What is a simple church?” In order to answer this question, we begin by taking a look at what is absolutely necessary for a local church to exist.  Our search leads us to answer other questions like, “What are non-negotiable and what is optional when it come to ‘church?’” “What things are hindering the church from being all that God wants it to be?” In this podcast we will also look at two aspects of modern church that usually are considered essential– Professionals and Programs.  We re-examine their necessity for a vibrant and multiplying church to exist. Podcast: What Is The Church?

In our first episode of the Keep it Simple Podcast , (or “second season” as some might like to call it) Tom and I discuss this basic question.   You can subscribe on iTunes at this link, or listen directly to the podcast below: This podcast episode refers to this YouTube Video:   About The “Keep it Simple Podcast” For over two years now,  Tom Lecompte and I have co-hosted the simple church podcast “Keep it Simple.”  Tom, from New Covenant Fellowship (a house church network in Louisville, KY) and I originally started the podcast because we thought it would be a good opportunity to connect and discuss simple/house/organic church issues we were wrestling with.  Two years into it, we are still going and now we want to “relaunch” the podcast with a specific focus… Read More »Podcast: What Is The Church?

Lent: A call to prayer

By Nate Smith Lent is a time for personal reflection, repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming Easter.  A set forty days for self-examination and giving up something in order to prepare our hearts. It is a chance to come with expectation for greater things.  We, as Christians, have this crazy belief that Jesus, who walked in the flesh, actually died and rose again.  Death itself has been conquered.  This is the reason, and the only reason, we have to gather, to worship and break bread.  It is all about Jesus. Friends, it is time to prepare our hearts, not as individuals, but as a community seeking the Lord with great expectation. Jesus reminded them, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,… Read More »Lent: A call to prayer

January 20 Leadership Gathering

January Simple Church Leadership Gathering. As we begin a new year, I would like to encourage all simple church leaders and those hoping to lead simple church this year to come together for “kick off” of sorts for 2016. We enjoy a dinner together and take time to re-focus our hearts on the vision God has given us, “Multiplying disciples and ultimately simple churches to the ends of the earth.” Please pray about and come ready to share briefly with others how you sense God leading you to live out our vision in 2016. Some questions to consider as you pray thought this: Are there any specific people the Lord is opening up discipleship relationships with? Are there any places the Lord is leading you to go to? Who are the persons of peace in… Read More »January 20 Leadership Gathering

A Good Video Explaining Simple Church

There are a lot videos floating around that aid in explaining simple church and house church ideas.  We’ve gathered several here on this website. This particular video pulls from a few of my favorites.  I also like the presenters thought about how simple churches can multiply… be in two simple churches at the same time! I’m interested in your thoughts on this idea. In some ways I think that the first “community” someone would be involved in could be something like a “Life Transformation Group” or a smaller disciple-making relationship of two or three. Nonetheless, I think he does a good job of explaining visually the hope of discipleship and church multiplication.  What are you thoughts?

Ever felt this way about church?

I saw this image the other day and chuckled to myself because of frequent conversations I have with people who express similar thoughts about church. “I survived another church service that should have been a podcast,” or “I survived another sermon that should have been me reading the Bible for myself”  is essentially the sentiment. When we make “church” primarily about the one-way delivery of content (messages, music, etc.), many people can leave the experience scratching their heads wondering why they didn’t just watch church on TV or download the podcast.  It’s as if they  look at our Sunday classes and think, “Hey, I’ll take this class online” (that is if they don’t just drop the class altogether). But is watching church, listening to the podcast, reading a blog post, etc. the same experience?  It… Read More »Ever felt this way about church?
